If you have just met someone online and you want to find out more about them then you can use the information that you have and do a little detective work.  While it might sound a little shady, it actually isn’t.  It is a lot safer than going into a new relationship with a stranger.  The information that you could use about your prospective date is their name, or their email, or even their chat name on a chat program like Aim or Google Chat.  You can then take that information and plug it into a Google Search.

If they have posted a comment anywhere or used their email on a website, then that information will pull up.  The best thing to have is their full name.  You can then use that to check some public online databases such as criminal databases both state and federal.  You might think it sounds a little paranoid, but you have no idea who this person is and it is just smart and safe thinking to want to check up on them before you go any further.  If you really want to be a stickler for safety, you could always ask them to submit to a criminal records check.  If they don’t then they are either a criminal or they are not that concerned about your safety.
